Neuroscience and Emotional Intelligence

What is Neuroscience and Emotional Intelligence?

The latest thinking and research proves that emotions are created and, contrary to the work of Daniel Goleman, are not just seated in the amygdala part of the brain. It also argues that events do not ‘trigger’ emotions such as road rage or anger at a work situation. Rather, that a set of behaviours are learned and the brain is continually predicting how to respond based on those concepts or patterns of behaviour we have learned. It feels like they are triggered but your brain is just putting together learned behaviour. So, if emotions are not triggered that gives us a greater level of personal responsibility for our emotional state.

What is fascinating is that 90% of the information flow from the brain is going outward. If your brain merely reacted to the light waves that hit your retina via your thalamus, then it would take many neurons to carry that visual information to the visual cortex. Instead, 90% of all connections coming into the visual cortex carry predictions from neurons in other parts of the cortex. Only a small part is made of visual input.

So, your brain is continually predicting what you a reading. In fact, right now, you are guessing at the next word that is going to come out of my nose. If the brain did not use predictions your head would have to be much larger. Hurray for predictions!

To understand how you can use this life changing information, for those who already hold an ABNLP recognised NLP Practitioner qualification, come along to one of our Master Practitioner Programs.

What is the very worst thing you could experience?

Most of us face challenges and upset on a frequent basis. Our emotions are impacted by events and people, life can be stressful sometimes. In my book I tell the reader that it is the myth of ‘outside in’ thinking that your feelings come from the outside world, when in fact they come from our thoughts and our physiology. Pretty powerful stuff to take in on an intellectual level never mind apply it yourself!

Recently I have been reading a classic by Victor Frankl. ‘Man’s Search for Meaning.’ He describes his experiences at Auschwitz, the Nazi death camp. They were used as slave labour in construction and from time to time were rewarded with coupons which could be exchanged for cigarettes, which in turn could be exchanged for soup or scraps of bread which were “a respite for starvation.” When an inmate was seen smoking, they knew he had given up.

So how did Frankl survive?

Imagine being offloaded from a train, the weaker inmates directed by a wave of the arm, unbeknown to them toward the gas chambers whilst the ones who look fit enough to work are stripped of everything they have: possessions, clothing and dignity, their heads and bodies completely shaved. When everything you have is taken away what do you have left?

Victor started to think about his wife and have conversations with her in his head, he did not know if she was still alive but that did not matter. “I understood how a man who has nothing left in this world still may know bliss, be it only for a brief moment in the contemplation of his beloved.” He learned, along with other inmates, to appreciate his luck when he was not put in the charge of a foreman who beat them and feeling joy at being sent to Dachau (no oven) rather than another death camp.

What he learned was that, “Man can preserve a vestige of spiritual freedom, independence of mind, even in such terrible conditions of psychic and physical stress.”

So how can we apply the same learning? By accepting that a negative emotion is coming from a thought, even if we are not consciously aware of it. Indeed, it could be the way we are thinking about something. We have a negativity bias which hugely magnifies threats to protect our ‘inner cave person.’ Once you realise it is your natural bias you can put it into perspective by thinking about all the good things that are going on in your life, immersing yourself into happy memories or appreciating all the good things you have.

We also uncover internal drivers, what they are and how they drive the individual (this is from the master practitioner level). You will then have the opportunity to have a one on one coaching session with another delegate to help them to set a plan to achieve their goals. Additionally, there are more opportunities to practice coaching built into the programme.

Day Five – You will learn how to employ linguistic coaching techniques to destroy negative emotions and limiting beliefs. We begin with techniques such as Resource Anchoring and collapsed anchors before moving onto Time Line Therapy™. There is the further available option of an additional coaching session if this is requested.

Day Seven – During day seven we study chain anchors, revisit eye patterns, predicate phrases, and words and show you how to reveal a person’s unconscious thought process for decision making.

There is a thinking pattern associated with the way we decide to make a purchase and this can be ‘fed back’ so as to close a sale or sell a product. We will also delve into the 5 step sales process. To the day we end by individual goal setting.

You Are Unique

That’s right, you are unique.

(based on Cats don’t bark by Shane Hipps)

Of all the billions of people born in the world before you, not one of them was like you and no one will ever be born in the future the same as you. This means that comparing yourself to someone else is pretty pointless and, dare I say it, self-limiting. There will always be a better footballer, dancer, gymnast or mathematician than you, unless your name is Cristiano Ronaldo and apparently he is pretty average at dancing and maths! The problem is, kids make comparisons about themselves with more academic or sporty classmates and before you know it, at around the age of seven, they have the seeds of a limiting belief planted within themselves and we hear them using phrases like, “I can’t do that.”

According to Tom Rath in his book, ‘Strengths Based Leadership’, if we identify a young person’s strengths between the ages of 15 and 23 they become more confident, enjoy what they are doing and are happier. What is also fascinating is that where organisations focus on employees’ strengths, engagement is 73%. Where they don’t focus on strengths, it is only 9%. It is therefore vital to build on what your employees are good at and enjoy doing. And the killer question to ask your management colleagues is, “What is your focus at appraisal time?”

For many adults who are doing their best to pay a mortgage, bring up kids, scrape together enough for a holiday but may feel a bit of self-doubt or need for security, it is about recognising that you are absolutely unique and can do pretty much anything if you have a strong enough desire. Feelings of inadequacy are just constructs from your early years and no longer need to apply.

Last Friday afternoon on our NLP Master practitioner course 10 people set about conquering their self-doubt by breaking a board with just their hand, positive belief and energy, which is very symbolic.

How to Create Engaging and Motivated Employees

How to Achieve Engaged and Motivated Staff

The best organisations have engaged and motivated employees who are happy and enjoy their work. So how do we achieve this?

According to Tom Rath it is all about identifying a person’s strengths in their early years. His research shows that where leadership fails to focus on individual strengths, employee engagement is 9%, whereas when the leadership focuses on and develops strengths, engagement is 73%.

He also suggests that learning about your strengths increases confidence because you spend more time doing what you are good at. STRENGTHS = CONFIDENCE

A study of 7660 people found that those with higher confidence aged 14-22 in 1979 earned more and still, 25 years later, had a higher rate of earnings than those with lower confidence

In addition, after these 25 years, the people with lower levels of confidence reported 3 times more health problems, the high confidence group reported fewer health problems and the people who had had the opportunity to find their strengths and use them aged 15-23 had significantly high job satisfaction and income 26 years later.

My dad suggested I studied Engineering when I was fifteen but maths was a weakness. My own son enjoys the Arts and English (and Fifa ) so that is where our focus is.

Our in-house Brilliant Leadership workshop shows leaders how to identify strengths, multiple intelligences, the career values of their team members and how to coach them in developing those areas. We are also now launching an open Leadership programme which will include all this good stuff too. If you are interested in this High Impact Leadership Programme, which will give you the ILM Level 5 Award in Leadership and Management, give us a call and ask for Lorna.

How to Become a Leader

How to Become a Great Leader

DON’T BE A NORM

In order to be a great leader or coach, you have to be an awe-inspiring version of yourself. That way you can be a role model for others and get the most satisfaction from your vocation or career. I say vocation, as being a great leader is much more than doing a job. It provides a purpose, or as Simon Sinek describes it, a why.

Recently, I was at my Uncle Kevin’s funeral. The Priest told the congregation about how Kevin did his job as a bricklayer with pride and recounted the tale of how, in one bad winter, Kevin lit a stove near the building materials to keep them dry. Worried that the fire would burn out, Kevin got out of bed at midnight and drove back to the site to rekindle the stove, in fact, he did this every night for a week!

Whatever your job, doing that little bit more and having a purpose will differentiate you from the norm.

NEGATIVITY BIAS

You probably don’t realise this, but your ancestors were probably a bunch of negative b******ds. You have evolved from tribes who were conditioned to focus on danger and threats. We have what is known as a negativity bias, which means that we focus more on the negative than the positive. This was essential for survival and the hard-wiring in the amygdala part of our brain would amplify threats over other events.

This cave person thinking still kicks in today, causing the production of cortisol which floods through our system to give us the energy to fight or flight. But when the stock market drops 20 points we don’t need to run fast or start a fight, so we become stressed. Our brain waves go from an alpha state to a beta frequency, and too much beta activity causes anxiety, stress and a lack of perspective. When this happens focus on the many good things you have going on in your life.
